What Are the Rules of Writing an Essay?

Each student has an opportunity of ordering professionally written essays, term papers, lab reports, resume, and other scholarly works online. But there are some moments when it is not available. For instance, while accomplishing the application task for college or university admission.

One has to keep in mind that any academic writing is defined as a formal type, so strict guidelines have to be obeyed.

There is a range of essential rules to consider when writing a high school, admissions or undergraduate level essay. Essays of different types serve for different purposes, but the rules are pretty much the same. Check your paper carefully against the list of our recommendations before submitting it to your instructor or college committee.

1)      Don’t use abbreviations. Only commonly used abbreviations like “e.g.” or “i.e.” are allowed. But it is forbidden to input CA for California, TV for television, PPT for presentation, etc. The teacher might be confused when seeing capital letters that can hold several meanings at a time. You may involve only governmental abbreviations, but then you have to mention the full institution’s name first.

2)      Slang is for oral communications! Refuse to use it in writing speech. At least, unless you’re running a social blog or teen’s magazine column. “Wanna,” “dude,” “hella,” “guys” – all belong to this category. You may insert these words in the linguistics essay as an example of modern vocabulary transformations or language evolution.

3)      It is desired to stay away from “etc.” usage. However, it’s not that critical. On the whole, “and so on” is not applicable.

4)      Vague phrases are a taboo. In other words, overused words like “a lot” or “things” are not suitable for academic writing.

5)      Contractions are not acceptable. As you might already know, “it’s”, “won’t”, “aren’t” must be replaced with corresponding “it is”, “will not”, and “are not”. Not that you will be misunderstood – those are just some unexplained general rules.

6)      No overloading language. Phrases like “you know”, “well anyway”, “I guess” create wordiness and make no sense. Wordiness is better to be avoided, but some sentences still require it (i.e., while listing a number of interrelated things). So, at least try to “ease” your text by deleting extra words.

7)      Forget about writing in first or second person. Just like with resume, instructions, and many other formal documents, it is expected that the author will apply third person only. What I mean is turning to words like “he”, “she”, “they”, or skipping person’s identity at all. First consists of I, we, me, our, etc. The second person involves the usage of you, yours and your. The exception is teacher’s individual permission to use that. Personal essays also allow breaking this rule.

8)      Digits usage. There is no way to write down 1-10 numbers in figures. They all have be spelled out. Only long numbers like dates or money amounts can be written in digital form.

9)      Titles and headings. According to the academic style required for a special assignment, certain titles have to be bold or underlined while in some cases like APA only headings have to be bold. In addition, headings must be involved only for particular formats.

10)  Proofreading. Double checking your work is always useful. It’s not a rule so far, but it raises the chances of receiving a passing grade. Moreover, a student might want to share his paper with someone to read before submitting it to the instructor. A reader will monitor the text being sober as a judge.

11)  Spell check only with a dictionary in your hands.

12)  Punctuations check. It relates to the correct usage of commas, dots, dashes, etc.

13)  Quotations appropriate usage. Do not ever copy other people’s words directly. Put them in quotation marks as work cited. Recall it once more in your reference list which should appear on a separate page at the end of the essay.

14)  Finally, don’t lose your individuality! Develop as original approach to a given topic as possible.
