Basic Rules on Writing Introduction and Conclusion in an Essay

Whatever is the size of the essay, topic or genre many students are likely to stumble at two points: where to start and how to wind up the story. Consequently, introduction and conclusion are the issues many writers break their heads over.

These essay parts are interrelated I would even call them a mirror reflexion of each other, since they have much in common. But, in face of their similarity, there are some essential distinguishing elements.

Complexity of writing introduction consists in its content, which should be catching and in its size, since a writer should clarify the main point of the essay in a concise form.

Consequently, essay introduction should:

  • Catch reader’s interest with a hook. These may be anecdote, quotation, paradox statement or even dialogue – that is any topic-related information
  • In short explain the topic of the composition, gradually approaching to thesis statement presentation
  • Provide clear thesis, usually in the form of an arguable statement

Similarly to introduction, conclusion of the essay should be cut down on details, summarizing main essay points, though without repeating them word for word.

So, written in several sentences, conclusion of the essay should:

  • Briefly describe main points and your feeling towards them. Avoid using clichés and repeating findings exactly. For a change, you may also use some memorable issue-related information
  • Restate thesis, considering all evidence discovered in the body of the essay. Mind not to wonder from the point or mention information that hasn’t been used in an essay
  • Emphasize the significance of some ideas and suggest new perspectives for the thesis development.

Correctly written introduction and conclusion determine success of the essay by a large extent. In the same way, these passages, being poorly crafted without any attention-grabbing and memorable details, can lead your composition even with extremely intriguing topic to a failure.
